I got into pest control long before I ever thought about building a company around it.
I started working in the pest control industry when I was about 14 years old, growing up on the South Side of Chicago. I spent summers around extermination work, helping with the administrative side of the business, learning how technicians worked, and seeing what actually happens behind the scenes when a homeowner calls because they have mice in the basement, ants in the kitchen, or something scratching around in the attic.
Over the years, I learned that pest control is a lot more complicated than most homeowners realize.

When you have a pest problem, you usually aren't researching the industry for fun. Something is happening in your house and you want it fixed. You pull out your phone, search for a pest control company, and start calling.

That sounds simple.

The problem is that the internet doesn't always make it simple.

Searching for a Pest Control Company Shouldn't Be This Difficult

Search for "pest control near me" and you'll probably see ads, national companies, directories, referral websites, local businesses and websites that look like pest control companies but aren't actually pest control companies at all.
As someone who came from the industry, I knew what I was looking at.

Most homeowners don't.

You might fill out a form thinking you're contacting a local exterminator, only to find out that your information was sent to several companies. You might call what appears to be a local company and end up talking to a national call center.

Meanwhile, there could be a great family-owned pest control company five miles away that barely appears in the search results.

That never made much sense to me.

Some of the best pest control companies I've come across aren't the companies with the biggest advertising budgets. They're the companies with technicians who have been doing the job for 20 years, owners who answer the phone themselves and customers who recommend them to their neighbors. Those companies shouldn't be invisible simply because someone else can spend more money on Google Ads.
And homeowners shouldn't have to dig through five different websites just to figure out who actually services their neighborhood.

That was the idea behind Pest Direct. I Wanted to Build Something I Would Actually Use. Pest Direct is meant to make finding a pest control company easier.

Instead of starting with advertisements, the idea is to start with the information homeowners actually care about.

-Does this company service my area?
-Do they handle the pest I'm dealing with?
-What do their customers say about them?
-Are they properly licensed?
-What services do they offer?
-Can I compare them with another company?

Those are pretty basic questions, but getting clear answers online can be surprisingly difficult.

Pest Direct brings that information together so homeowners can research pest control companies, compare their options and contact providers directly. We're not trying to decide who you should hire. We want to give you enough information to make that decision yourself. That distinction is important to me. Transparency Became the Biggest Part of the Idea. The more I worked on Pest Direct, the more I realized that the bigger issue wasn't necessarily finding pest control companies.

It was transparency.

Homeowners deserve to know who they're contacting.Pest control companies deserve to know how they're being presented. And small businesses deserve a way to compete that isn't entirely based on who is willing to spend the most money acquiring a customer.

The cost of advertising in home services has climbed dramatically. Pest control companies can spend a significant amount of money just getting the phone to ring. Lead generation companies add another layer. In some cases, businesses pay for every customer inquiry they receive, whether that person ultimately becomes a customer or not.

Those costs eventually have to come from somewhere. I wanted Pest Direct to work differently.

Instead of building another website designed around selling the same homeowner inquiry over and over, I wanted to build a place where pest control companies could actually build a presence. A place where a small owner-operated company could appear next to a much larger competitor and let homeowners compare them based on the things that matter.

-Their services.
-Their reputation.
-Their reviews.
-Their coverage area.
-Their experience.

And eventually, more information that helps people understand exactly what they're getting before they make a call.
Pest Control Is Still a Local Business. One thing I've learned from being around this industry is that pest control is incredibly local.

A company serving Chicago may deal with completely different problems than a company serving Tampa, Phoenix or New York. Even two towns 20 minutes apart can have different housing, construction and pest pressures. That's why I don't think finding a pest control company should feel like shopping through a generic national list. Homeowners should be able to find the companies that actually work in their community.

That includes the big companies if they're a good fit. It also includes the independent company with three trucks that has been taking care of homes in the same town for 30 years.

Pest Direct isn't about saying one type of company is better than another. It's about making sure homeowners can actually see their options.

We're Just Getting Started

I've been working on Pest Direct for years because I believe there is room for something better in this industry.

-Not another lead-generation website.
-Not another page pretending to be a local pest control company.
-A real resource.

I want Pest Direct to become a place homeowners can visit whether they're dealing with termites, mice, ants, bed bugs, mosquitoes, wildlife or simply trying to prevent a problem before it starts.

A place where they can learn what they're dealing with, understand their options and find a company that fits what they need. And for pest control companies, I want it to be a place where doing good work actually matters. If a local company takes care of its customers, earns great reviews and builds a strong reputation in its community, that should help them get discovered.

That's ultimately why I started Pest Direct.I grew up around this industry. I've seen how it works from the inside, and I've seen how confusing it can look from the outside.I think homeowners deserve a clearer way to find help. And I think good pest control companies deserve a better way to be found.

That's what we're trying to build.
