Fully local, free dictation for Windows and Mac that works in any app
Whisperstream is push-to-talk dictation for Windows and Mac that runs entirely on your computer. Local speech recognition converts your voice to text and types it into whatever app you're using, with no cloud transcription and no internet connection required. It's free and open source.
Speech recognition is built on NVIDIA Parakeet and supports 39 languages. AI cleanup cuts filler words and applies spoken corrections using Stream-1 Mini on your device, or an enhancement provider you configure yourself. A custom dictionary boosts names and jargon so cleanup spells them right, and you can import your vocabulary list from CSV.
Per-app modes let you set a custom AI prompt for each app or site. There's also Agent Speak for hearing and answering Claude Code or Codex responses, a Lockdown Mode that disables cloud enhancement, and a searchable, encrypted transcript history with audio replay. You can also import audio files to transcribe locally.
Setup is simple: configure any key as a global shortcut and hold to talk, or toggle for hands-free dictation. It works in apps like Outlook, VS Code, and your browser with no add-in needed. The installer is Authenticode-signed, no account is required, and there's no subscription.
